The short answer
Start with your washer's permitted detergent route. Use the product's own dose marks, configure the correct drawer insert, and recheck concentration when changing an automatic liquid supply.
Find the washer's detergent route
Open the detergent drawer and identify the main-wash compartment, any removable insert, and any bulk reservoir. Then find the model number and its owner's manual. The route from bottle to drum determines which detergent formats you can use and where they go.
A single-load drawer, an automatic liquid dispenser, and a machine with a dedicated packet compartment require different instructions. Even within one brand, the arrangement can change by model. Avoid buying a format around an assumption carried over from a previous washer.
Start your shopping note with the washer's permitted formats. Then add the kind of measuring routine you want to repeat: a measured liquid dose, a powder scoop, a packet, or a documented automatic-dispensing setting.
Read HE and concentration as separate details
HE means high efficiency. GE describes HE detergent as formulated to produce fewer suds in the lower-water conditions of HE washing. Follow the washer's requirement for the HE designation on the product you buy.
Concentration changes how much product you need for a given dose. A capful from a new bottle need not equal a capful of the old formula. Use the new product's label and measuring marks instead of keeping a familiar-looking amount by habit.
For a simple hypothetical example, one product label might specify 20 mL for a stated load while another specifies 35 mL. Those quantities describe their respective instructions. You cannot use the second bottle's cap mark to measure the first product reliably unless the actual volume is known.
Keep the supplied measure with its bottle. If the markings are difficult to read, choose packaging with a clear measuring system you can use accurately; do not replace the dose with an unverified pump count.
Configure the drawer for the format
Whirlpool's single-load dispenser guidance gives an example of why the insert matters. It describes a low selector position for liquid and a high position for powder. GE's guidance describes a detergent box and insert that must be removed for powder on the applicable drawer design.
Those are different instructions for different hardware. Look for the diagram matching your machine and follow that version. A general article cannot tell you which insert to remove from an unidentified washer.
The maximum line is also a hardware limit, not a target dose for every load. Whirlpool warns that overfilling can cause detergent to dispense too early. Measure the product's required amount, keep within the dispenser limits, and ask the maker if the two instructions appear incompatible.

| Format | Check on the detergent | Check in the washer manual |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid | HE designation and labeled dose | Correct insert and permitted compartment |
| Powder | Labeled amount and washing conditions | Whether the drawer accepts it and selector position |
| Packet | Package quantity for the load | Drum placement or an expressly designed packet compartment |
| Automatic liquid supply | Compatibility and stated concentration | Reservoir type, concentration setting, and refill procedure |
Give packets their own placement check
GE says detergent packets normally go into the basket before clothes, with an exception for washers having a dispenser specifically designed for them. Whirlpool's single-load drawer guidance also excludes single-dose packets from that ordinary compartment.
Check the packet manufacturer's instructions alongside the washer manual. A compartment designed for liquid cannot be assumed to accept a packet. If the washer has a special packet dispenser, use that model's directions instead of a general rule.
Packets offer a preset quantity, which changes how you adjust for a small or large load. Follow the package for the exact product. Keep laundry products in their original secured packaging and follow its storage warnings; a decorative open jar removes important instructions from the routine.
Recheck the dispenser when changing detergent
A bulk dispenser measures detergent for you, but it still needs the correct setup. Whirlpool's Load & Go guidance says to use the permitted HE liquid and adjust the concentration setting. The control sequence depends on the washer.
Before changing products, note what remains in the reservoir and read the machine's procedure for changing or cleaning it. Do not pour a different formula into the remaining supply and assume the old setting remains appropriate. Check any restrictions on mixtures, additives, and viscosity.
Also identify how to use a single manual dose when needed. Follow the documented steps to disable bulk dispensing; accidentally using both routes can add detergent twice. A small note beside the washer can help everyone in the home know which system is active.
Adjust from the label and the load
GE identifies load size, soil, water temperature, and hardness as factors in dosing. Use the detergent label's instructions for those conditions and the washer's permitted settings. A light load of shirts and a heavily soiled towel load need not follow the same measuring mark.
If excess suds or residue appear, review the amount, format, compartment, and cycle together. Adding more detergent before checking those details can make the problem worse. Follow the washer maker's troubleshooting instructions if the issue continues.
Choose a product whose permitted format and measurement process you can reproduce. Write down the selected dose instructions and any automatic-dispenser setting when the new bottle arrives. If the detergent and measuring tools need a better home, plan the laundry storage around reachable shelves while keeping the original package accessible.
